Chief for a Day!

The Annual Police Chief for a Day essay contest is now open.

Students entering into Grade 5 this fall are invited to enter the essay contest now to become Durham Regional Police Service's Chief for a Day. The theme of the essay contest is entitled "What would you do if you were the Chief of Police for a day?" The essay is limited to 500 words.

The winner will serve as Chief for a Day in October 2021.

All submissions must include:
- Name of student submitting essay (Grade 5 in September 2021)
- Name and city of school attending
- School Board the student attends (DDSB, DCDSB, KPRDSB, PVNCCDSB etc.)

All essays for consideration are due on Wednesday September 15th, 2021 and are to be submitted via email to: chiefforaday@drps.ca

Strong Summer Academy

The DDSB in partnership with 100 Strong Foundation is inviting students and families to an information session about the Strong Summer Academy program for July 2021. This program is held annually for self-identified Black male students currently in Grades 6-8. For more information about the program, can be found on the 100 Strong Foundation website: http://www.100strong.ca/strong-academy/

This year the Strong Summer Academy Program will run as a two-week completely virtual program from July 12 to 23, 2021 with an orientation July 7 and 8. The theme of this year’s program is The Ten Days of Black Excellence. Sessions will run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm each day during the program time.

Experiment with starting your day in a more mindful way and notice what you feel as a result.

WAKING UP

* Lie in bed, stretch and wiggle your fingers and toes. Notice how that feels.

* Sit up and notice three things that you like in the room.

* Get up, take a big stretch and shake out your arms and legs. Notice how that feels.

* Take a big breath in… and breathe out very slowly…

GETTING READY

* Pay attention to the temperature, sound and feel of the water as you shower or wash.

* Notice the smell of the soap you use.

* How does the towel feel as you dry yourself?

* As you get dressed, notice how each item of your clothing feels and sounds as you put it on.

* Breathe in deeply… and then out.

MINDFUL BREAKFAST

* Turn off your gadgets.

* Eat slowly and mindfully.

* Notice the feel, smell and taste of each mouthful. Do they change as you chew slowly?

* Carefully tidy your dish or plate away. Notice any sounds, smells or textures as you do this

Please join the Keenanow Indigenous Employee Network (KIEN) on April 28^th at 6pm for a fun-filled evening of laughs with Turtle Concepts. Join us to connect and learn together as we instill pride and support in ourselves and each other as Indigenous people. We are honoured to have Jill Thompson of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to welcome us to the land. Jill Thompson is the Indigenous Cultural Advisor for Ontario Tech University. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents of Indigenous DDSB students.

The first 20 people to register will receive a free resource to aid in their journey.

Chef à l'École is excited to bring you a virtual Parent Engagement workshop that encourages spontaneous oral participation for French learners of all abilities.

In the virtual program, participants will be invited directly into the chef’s kitchen. Bake alongside the chef to create a delicious French-inspired treat. Participants will be able to practise some newly learned French vocabulary out loud, and interact directly with the chef. While baking, participants will be learning about French culture, listening to French music and even learning how to play the spoons! There will also be opportunities for questions and answers.

Please note that the first event begins on June 1 and there are limited spots available.
